I love the name "Precious." It doesn't have to be a materialistic meaning, it is emotional and I love how it sounds.

I will name my daughter Precious-Maria. If she grows up and doesn't like "Precious" she could go by Maria. But to me and to all those who love her she will be "Precious" and no matter what I name her, she will have people who will not love her and criticize her and her name. It's a fact we cannot change, the name has nothing to do with it.

Sure names can be words. Some words make better names than some other words. For instance, I can tell you that as a Crystal, many people think (and I agree) that my name is tacky, likewise with Willow (I don't know how much that has to do with bad fanfiction). Soon people are going to argue that words like "Awesome" make perfectly good names, or "Powerful", "Pretty", "Smart", "Superior", or even "Serendipity" (I swear there must be people named this already). "Integrity". Could be a girl's name. I don't see them as any better or worse than "Precious" for a name. I find them all pretty tacky. If you like these words, sure. All power to you.
